10 Smallest Teams To Play In The Football League

1. New Brighton Tower

As with Thames, New Brighton Tower were founded to fill a newly built stadium. Based in the Wirral seaside resort of New Brighton , the side was founded by the owners of New Brighton Tower, a newly built observation tower which not only looked like the Blackpool Tower, it was 15 metres bigger! In the hope of providing entertainment past the traditional summer tourist period, Tower Athletic Ground was built, and New Brighton Tower FC were created to play there. The owners spent incredible amounts of money on the playing squad and in 1898 The Towerites' application to join the Football League was accepted. Their three seasons in the Second Division resulted in three top five finishes, finishing higher than Arsenal and Newton Heath (who would later become Manchester United) in 1900-01. However, financial losses forced the club to close in the 1901 offseason. It would be over 20 years until Wirral neighbours Tranmere Rovers joined the League, a position they would hold until 2015. New Brighton would again be home to a Football League team between 1923-1951. The Tower itself became unused after the First World War.
