10 Things I Learned From Wimbledon 2013
2. Watching The Future
Now there are many areas to pick at on BBC Sport and complain about chief of which being they dont show enough sport but for Wimbledon the BBC really do throw out all the shots showing as many matches as they can nearly shutting down their two main channels to show nothing but tennis coverage. Over recent years this has meant a lot more coverage on the smaller courts showing some of the lesser known players and matches.
The success of people like Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic who came from the junior ranks of tennis more fans have been interested to watch the bright young talents of tenniss future. The Wimbledon Junior championships run during the second week of Wimbledon and there was lots of British interest from young prospect Kyle Edmund. The 18 year old has already won two boys Grand Slam titles as a double pairing and now at Wimbledon he had not only the boys championship in line but had a wildcard draw into the full mens tournament.
Although he lost in the first round of the mens draw Edmund made it to two boys semi-finals in the singles and doubles but sadly lost in both. Both matches however were shown on the BBC as well as the Junior finals showing some commitment at checking out the stars of the future giving them and us a first glimpse at who we might be watching and cheering on in 5 years time.
Laura Robson was first brought to British fans attention so maybe someone like Kyle Edmund will be more noticed and supported if more people watch him during his trails of climbing the tennis rankings. Its often said you support and get behind a player more not only the more you know about his background and the earlier you have seen him play, grow up and mature on court and Edmund looks a hell of a talent on the ATP tour and few have any doubts we will be hearing his name a lot in the coming years.
