10 Things (Other Than Money) Used To Purchase Footballers

4. Ian Wright - A Set Of Weights

The Transfer: Greenwich Borough (England) to Crystal Palace (England). The Year: 1985. The Fee: A set of weights. Ian Wright went on to become an England international and one of Arsenal's best ever strikers (he is still the Gunners' second-highest goalscorer of all time behind the legendary Frenchman Thierry Henry). Arsenal paid £2.5 million for his services from Crystal Palace and he would later move to West Ham United for £500,000, but his early years saw him moved between clubs for a much humbler fee. In fact, a set of weights was all it took for Crystal Palace to acquire his services from non-league Greenwich Borough after was spotted by a Palace scout. He was 21 at the time - quite old to be making a first move into the professional game, especially at that level.
