10 Things Paolo Di Canio Wants You To Forget

3. He Hauled A Goalkeeper Off after 20 Minutes

Never one to hesitate in making a big decision, one of Di Canio's many managerial head-scratchers came a mere 21 minutes in a league game at Preston. Already 0-2 down and deeming the goalie to have been the man accountable for this, Di Canio hauled Wes Foderingham off and replaced him with his backup 'keeper. Understandably unhappy at the situation, Foderingham exchanged words with Di Canio on the touchline before kicking a water bottle in anger and spending the rest of the game sat in the stands. "He's the worst professional I've ever seen" Di Canio would go on to tell the press. BBC Wiltshire, "If he doesn't come out and say sorry to the fans for his unprofessionalism, then he is out of my team". A few days later an apology was forthcoming and the player eventually found his way back into the team. On the face of it a blunt but effective exercise in player discipline, but the incident drew even more unwanted attention to both the club and the manager for the very public way chose to belittle a player.
