10 World-Class Players You Didn’t Know Man Utd Nearly Signed

10. Alfredo Di Stefano

Ravaged by the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, Manchester United and their manager Sir Matt Busby found themselves with no option but to rebuild the club. The much loved €œBusby Babes€ side that the Scot built had been decimated and Busby himself spent a prolonged period in hospital after the crash. The responsibility of rebuilding the team fell, initially, to Busby€™s assistant, Jimmy Murphy. The Welshman did an admirable job, with players returning from Munich augmented by graduates from the youth team and players loaned from amateur side Bishop Auckland. There was an offer of assistance from further afield as well. Real Madrid offered to loan United the great Alfredo Di Stefano. There was no such empathy from the Football Association however, who vetoed the move.
