Having made over 500 appearances for the West Ham, it won't come as a welcome reminder for Hammers' supporters that bitter rivals Spurs tried to sign their club icon once upon a time. Similar to how the Anfield faithful like to forget that the events of Gerrard-gate in the summer of 2005 never happened, the Hammers also pretend that Moore never sought a move to Spurs directly before the victorious 1966 World Cup. With West Ham refusing to sell their prized asset, Moore's dogged determination to force through a move almost prevented him from lining out for England in the tournament. With his contract having expired on 30 June, he was unattached but also ineligible for the national team, such was his subsequent non-affiliation with the FA. An agreement had to be thrashed out in quick-time fashion between England boss Alf Ramsey and West Ham boss Ron Greenwood, in order for Moore to represent the expecting nation. Four years later, Moore desperately clawed at another potential move to White Hart Lane, as his ambitions of domestic success dwindled by the year. There was to be no Spurs move, but within four years, he was kicked out of the club and handed a free transfer to Fulham in 1973. One can't help but feel if it was modern day football, Moore would have gotten his big move a lot sooner, rather than moaning for seven years before anticlimatically ending up at Cottage Cottage.
