11 Players Sunderland Should Never Have Sold

11. Michael Bridges

Michael Bridges was one of the most promising young strikers around back when he began his professional career with Sunderland in 1995. He couldn't prevent relegation in his first season, but he shone in patches during two Division One years before promotion back to the top flight. He had pace, and a deadly finish, though opportunities were limited due to the ridiculous nature of the Quinn-Phillips partnership. He was allowed to depart and sign for Leeds United for £5 million, a huge sum of money for a lot of clubs back in the day. Unfortunately for Bridges, his career was blighted with injuries and Wearside was the place where he racked up his most appearances. If he could have been convinced to hang around one more season, he could've been a tremendous boost during Sunderland's post-Christmas slump in the 99/00 season, which saw them fall from 2nd to just missing out on European football in 7th.
