Any incident in which fans and players become too closely acquainted can often be see as bizarre (excluding the odd goal celebration), and no incident was more jaw-dropping in this regard than Eric Cantona's infamous flying assault on an abusive Crystal Palace supporter. The fan had ran down several fights of stairs to hurl insults at the Frenchman as he was sent off, but Cantona surprised everybody by launching into a kick over the top of the advertising hoarding between them. He followed up with several punches before being dragged away, and was slapped with a huge eight month ban as a result. He still looks back fondly on the incident however, citing it as one of the highlights of his career.
