In the summer of 2013, Tottenham finally accepted that star man Gareth Bale had outgrown White Hart Lane and simply had to move on to bigger and better things. In fairness to Daniel Levy, though, he had seemingly struck gold by landing a staggering world record fee of £85.3 million for the Welsh wizard.

In an attempt to replace the many, many, talents of the departing Bale, Tottenham recruited several new stars. However, the man selected to replicate the Welshman’s goals was Roberto Soldado. The Spaniard signed for a hefty £26 million from La Liga side Valencia, much to the delight of Spurs fans everywhere.

Two years later, the 30-year-old has bagged just seven goals and is now worth a fraction of that fee.

In stark contrast, the Gunners bought Alexis Sanchez last summer for an undisclosed fee of around £30 million -£35 million. The Chilean fired a total of 25 goals during a spectacular maiden year in the Premier League, capping a wonderful season with that memorable FA Cup final goal against Aston Villa at Wembley.

No prizes for guessing which club got the better value for money.
