10. El Salvador (1970)
Throughout the 70’s and early 80’s, El Salvador were surprisingly persistent with qualifying for the World Cup. They managed to make the tournament finals twice and even put in decent qualifying campaigns from time to time, even if they didn’t go all the way.
Sadly for El Salvador, both of their appearances at the World Cup finals make this list with 1970 being the slightly better (or least bad) of the two campaigns. Drawn into Group 1 against Belgium, the Soviet Union and Mexico, they suffered three decisive defeats and barely made a ripple on the tournament's surface.
El Salvador kicked off their short lived campaign with 0-3 loss to Belgium, before taking a heavy 0-4 defeat against Mexico and finishing up with a 0-2 loss to the Soviet Union. As glum as this campaign seemed, they managed to do a lot worse in 1982…
