As mentioned in an earlier entry, Alex McLeish had a weird signing policy during his time as Rangers manager. In essence, it seemed like the Scot started to run out of ideas in short order, meaning he reverted to signing players who simply couldn't cut it, journey man pros who baffled everyone. One of those players was Olivier Bernard, a defender who had previously spent 5 years with Newcastle, fitting into Bobby Robson's side well from 2000-2004, before Graeme Souness cut him from plans the following season. Expressing an interest in playing in Champions League again - just as he had done with Newcastle - Bernard signed for Rangers after a brief spell at Southampton. 9 appearances later, he was back out the door, a miserable failure. Even worse, during all 9 of his games, the Frenchman was dire, conceding free kicks left, right and centre and being pulled all over the place by defenders from even the lowest of clubs in Scotland. Spending the vast majority of his time on the bench during just one season, Bernard will be lucky if many Rangers fans even remember his name.
