The promotion felt it couldn't support the women's side, and wanted to free up talent to fight elsewhere. A noble thought, but an odd one - given the number of cards Bellator was putting on, many of which had questionable talent, how hard could it be to support a few WMMA fights? It was especially odd to see Bellator cut the women just as the women's side of the sport was really taking off. So this is a welcome return, but a new weight class. They no doubt went the 145lb route as it had the best available fighters not already in the UFC. In fact, Bellator actually possesses four of the top ten female featherweights as ranked by the Unified Women's Mixed Martial Arts rankings. Not bad. This is Coenen's coming out party in Bellator. She's the big name in the division, and she'll be expected to fight for a title soon - probably at one of their first events in 2015. Annalisa Bucci (7-3) fought twice this year, in May, losing one and winning the other, both by decision. That's about the only advantage the 6th ranked fighter will have over Coenen, however, who hasn't fought in over a year. Coenen (21-6) is coming off a loss to Cyborg Justino back in July 2013, but with her experience, it shouldn't be too much of a hurdle. For her part, Cyborg is UFC-bound, and dropping down to 135lbs, which makes Coenen top dog at featherweight. She wins this one via submission.
