5 Signs That Leicester City Are The New Blackburn Rovers

1. May 25th, 1992

If Leicester City are to emulate Blackburn Rovers title-winning season they could do worse than to get on YouTube. May 25th 1992 was a typically balmy day at Wembley, remembered by City and Rovers fans alike, but for completely different reasons. Before kick-off there was nothing to separate two teams equally-poised to win a place in the inaugural FA Premier League. Sadly for Leicester, a goal from their former striker Mike Newell before half-time meant it wouldn't be them, and by the final whistle Kenny Dalglish was out of his mustard suit and running around the pitch in delight. After 90 minutes of football his Blackburn Rovers side were propelled into a brave new world, while Brian Little's Leicester City had no choice but to stay behind in the second-tier of English football. The Foxes lost in the play-offs again twelve months later to even less fashionable Swindon Town before they finally, at the third time of asking, battled their way to the big time by beating local rivals Derby 2-1. By this time Leicester's momentum had gone, Rovers had stolen a march on the top division and in a cruel twist of fate, Blackburn would go to lift the trophy at the end of that season while City were relegated at the first time of asking. In 1992, on the hottest of May days, both clubs dreamt of greatness. Today, Leicester again hold the same dream in their hands and by May 2016 it could finally be the side from the Midlands who pip Manchester United to the title.
