6 Bizarre Moments In Floyd Mayweather's Career

3. Controversial Knock Out of Victor Ortiz (September 2011) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6Zert5VaWk Mayweather's September 2011 Welterweight title fight against Victor Ortiz was highly anticipated. Ortiz, despite a smaller reach, had a 29-2-2 record with 22 KO's. Mayweather at the time was 41-0-0. The fight was very close, with both fighters trading rounds early on. In the fourth round, Ortiz started cornering Mayweather and landing huge combos. Twice in the round, Ortiz was warned for head contact. (With 2:16 remaining and again at 1:15.) With less than 20 seconds remaining, Ortiz cornered Mayweather and unleashed a massive combo. During the combo, Ortiz headbutted Mayweather, forcing referee Joe Cortez to halt the fight and penalize Ortiz. Just before the fight resumed, Ortiz leaned in to hug Mayweather and apologize for the shot. Simultaneously, Cortez said "Let's go," and the fight resumed. Still trying to apologize, Ortiz was clocked by a vicious left hook, then a right, and down he went. Unable to answer the 10-count, Ortiz was knocked out, Mayweather was declared the winner. It was a controversial KO, but as every referee says before every fight, "Protect yourself at all times." It was a questionable shot by Mayweather, but it was within the rules. Just when the controversy seemed over, HBO's Larry Merchant interviewed Mayweather after the fight. Merchant began by asking questions about what Floyd did and why, only to have Mayweather direct attention to family and his fans. Merchant kept prodding Mayweather, "So you're saying that even though he wasn't protecting himself ... that you unfairly took advantage? What do you say to those who say, what did you do there?" After another exchange, Mayweather tried ending the interview, seeing what Merchant was simply trolling him. "You ain't never give me a fair shake... I'm through, put someone else through to give me an interview." Merchant shoots back, "What are you talking about?" Hook, Line, and Sinker. Mayweather explodes, and starts screaming at Mayweather. "You ain't never give me a fair shake! HBO needs to fire you - you don't know about boxing. You ain't ." Completing the troll with the line of the year, Merchant responds with, "If I was fifty years younger, I'd kick your ." Classic.
