6 Unforgettable Moments From The 2014 Cheltenham Festival

4. Quevega Creates History The story goes that the wondermare Quevega is brought out once or twice a season, to the Cheltenham Festival Mares race in March, and to the Punchestown Festival in April, and she is not seen again until 11 months later at Cheltenham, where she starts the race as favourite, and flies past the other horses as she flies up the hill to victory. This year, the race was more important - this was a chance for Quevega to break history. Quevega was aiming to break Golden Miller's record of winning the same race 5 times at the festival, and with the most successful Jockey/Trainer combination in history in her corner in Ruby Walsh and Willie Mullins, and the Irish nation supporting her, there was no lack of money as she began the race as 8/11 favourite. She cruised around the track, and was in a better position turning for home than she was last year, but stablemate Glen's Melody took a lead at the final fence, but as the track began to ascend, Glen's Melody began to slow, and Quevega began to eat up the yards, eventually passing her with 75 yards to spare. The result was a Willie Mullins 1-2 in the OLBG Mares Hurdle, and it finished in the order he wanted. History was broken, and one day in the future, there will be a statue of Quevega at Cheltenham Racecourse. The only question is will she be back again next year to make it 7?
