9 Newcastle Fans Who Should Have Played For The Club

Steve Stone may have wound up at Newcastle in the end, spending five years on the coaching staff before being fired (he’ll have John Carver to thank for that), but the Gateshead native never did achieve the professional dream of his during his playing days.

The opportunity to sign for Newcastle eluded him for the duration of his career, floating from Nottingham Forest to Aston Villa, to Portsmouth and Leeds. However, the midfielder was a fine footballer and quite underrated in some quarters. He displayed his best football at Nottingham Forest, and was duly rewarded with nine England caps, scoring in two of them. His performances for Aston Villa and Portsmouth in the Premier League were exemplary - and he even stole a point for the latter at St. James’ Park in 2004.

His signing wouldn’t have pulled up any trees, but he would have been a healthy option to have in the squad, and considering his love for the club, he probably wouldn’t have kicked up too big a fuss.
