Cardiff City's Malaysian owners are effectively rebooting the image of the club with a radical re-design. In a permanent move effective immediately, Cardiff will now wear a red kit instead of their regular blue kit. The club will also adopt a new club crest of a red dragon instead of a blue bird, and obviously will no longer call themselves the bluebirds. Although not confirmed, the likely new nickname will be 'The Dragons" and the club will also carry the new slogan "Fire and Passion". The idea behind the change is to create a patriotic Welsh image for the club that play their football in the English Championship and have been flirting with promotion to the Premier League for years. The Malaysian owners hope that the switch to red and adopting Welsh heritage will draw more fans from their own country to support Cardiff, in some ways making them the Welsh national side playing in the English league. Tan Sri Vincent Tan and Dato Chan Tien Ghee also hope the club's new image will forge a bigger following in Asia. Cardiff will keep a blue away strip and will also introduce a black third strip for next season. When the idea behind the re-branding of Cardiff was first suggested last month, it caused outrage amongst supporters who weren't keen on their side effectively becoming something new. However the owners claim extensive research and their claims of fan support for the move has led to the shake-up. Further to the re-branding, Cardiff have announced plans to build a brand-new training ground, pay off the Langston debt, and provide their manager Malky Mackay with a transfer kitty to fire the club into the Premier League. The owners have also announced the possibility of expanding the Cardiff City stadium based on the new supporters they hope to attract from this move. A statement on Cardiff's official website said: "Following a comprehensive review of wider supporter feedback via email, letters, media coverage and polls run via the official Supporters Club and Media Wales and as a consequence of the above commitment, Cardiff City Football Club will also reactivate rebranding proposals with a view to exploiting and maximising its brand and commercial revenues in international markets, which it is hoped in turn will bring success to the club locally, whilst also attracting new partners and investors."
