Conor McGregor V Floyd Mayweather Super-Fight: 5 Positives & 5 Negatives
2. This Fight Has A Chance To Make Boxing Look Very Good
There's no denying that there are stereotypes about both sports, certainly perpetuated by the old guard of boxing fans and media alike. In some eyes, boxing is "the sweet science" while MMA is nothing more to them than "human cockfighting." Boxing is technical. Beautiful. Superior. Mixed martial arts is just legalised brutality that belongs on the street, not inside arenas.
And there is a very big problem with this mindset going into this fight. The most likely scenario is that Mayweather is going to go out and dominate McGregor for the duration of this fight with his precision and speed. Sure, McGregor has both of these attributes, but boxing in an MMA sense is just a different animal to boxing on its own.
While the overall striking in the UFC has evolved quickly and impressively over the past couple of decades, even those with an MMA leaning bias would admit that it's still a few tiers below boxing.
If Mayweather goes in there and puts on the performance most people expect, then it may typecast MMA further as "inferior" to those who perpetuate that thought process.
