Formula 1 2013 - How To Solve A Problem Like Pirelli

From Behind the Glasses

In my opinion, Pirelli are being unfairly blamed for things that were pushed on them by the FIA, typically implementing regulations to control elements of the sport they simply don€™t understand. Their tyres are very similar now to what they supplied in 2011 and 2012, and some people have simply got louder about their performance than they were previously and this years cars have accentuated their limits more due to the increase in pace over the winter. Aside from altering their construction slightly to prevent the concerning delaminations we€™ve seen in the last two races, which might have a far more significant outcome if they were to occur in a high-speed corner like Curva Parabolica at Monza for example, I think Pirelli should maintain their compounds. They should instead look to introduce more durable tyres for the 2014 season, which will have its own demands with the arrival of the 1.6 litre turbocharged engines, liable to put more particular demands on traction characteristics of the rear tyres. Only time will tell, but we may have a far more opinionated view on things come the end of the season.
