Luis Suarez To Miss The World Cup?

Liverpool and Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has injured his knee in training and could miss the World Cup, according to the BBC. The 27-year-old will undergo keyhole surgery on Thursday to repair the damage, but faces a race against time to be fit for the tournament in Brazil, which starts in just 20 days. Suarez is believed to have damaged his meniscus, recovery from which can take between 15-20 days. Uruguay play England on 19 June in Sao Paulo while their Group D opener against Costa Rica starts on 14 June. The absence of the striker from the tournament would clearly be a massive blow to “scar Tabárez's side. Suarez finished as the Premier League's top goalscorer this season with 31 goals. He also finished as the top goalscorer in the South American section of World Cup qualifying, netting 11 times as Uruguay finished fifth in the continent's nine-team group. That relatively poor placed finish meant Uruguay had to compete in a play-off to reach the finals, which they won 5-0 against Jordan. And though Suarez did not score in that game, he has a proven track record at major tournaments, helping his country to the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup and Copa America glory a year later. The Liverpool hitman has been capped 77 times for Uruguay, scoring 38 times.
