It might seem somewhat pointless to get rid of a player with only 5 months left on his contract, but United could surely still get some money for the former England international and more importantly it would allow him to move on with his head held high, rather than having to watch his contract run out. When Carrick leaves in the summer he should have no shortage of offers, but it would be far more beneficial to him to get a deal in place now and get some gametime before the end of the season. United keeping ahold of him at this stage is a pretty redundant decision even if he is the vice captain.
