Manchester United have already tried signing Gareth Bale. Twice. The first occasion as a precocious young talent he chose the bigger wages and perhaps improved chances of regular football offered by Spurs. The second occasion hed already set his sights on Madrid by the time United came calling late on to try hijack the move. To fail in one bid for Bale would be bad luck. To fail twice could be called careless. And to fail a third time, well, only time will tell.
