Newcastle Manager's First Interviews - Did They Deliver On Their Promises?
6. Glenn Roeder
"I'm happy with a two-year deal because it keeps us all on our toes. "When I came up here as a player, I suppose that having an ambition of managing the team would not have been an option. "As I went on, and if you had asked me a couple of years down the line, I would have said I would like to be a manager here one day. "Now it has happened it shows that dreams do come true. "If you work hard and fight for the dream it proves that anything in life is possible - and when the opportunity comes along you have to be ready for it. "I am looking forward to the next few seasons now and I think it is going to be an exciting time for everyone connected with this football club."
Roeder was spot on when he said that everyone was on their toes as he was out of a job before the 2006/07 season came to a close. Glenn really didn't say too much after being handed the reigns on a full time basis following an extraordinary second half to the 2005/06 campaign as caretaker. Although it was great to see how much it meant to him. Ultimately however, he will go down in the record books as the caretaker who stayed too long. As he proved at West Ham before, Glenn simply wasn't up to the standards that Premier League management requires. Saying that, no one was complaining with a European quarter-final appearance... Did He Deliver? He Kind Of Predicted He Wouldn't Be Around For Long, So Yes, In A Way.
