As shown by many of the previous points in this list, Advocaat's main attribute is probably his unpredictability. His career path is long and winding, with various returns and sudden departures aplenty, as well as the odd baffling decision. A main bone of contention among Netherlands fans in the Euro 2004 campaign was his decision to substitute the dominating Arjen Robben for the ageing Paul Bosvelt - and subsequently losing the game 3-2 to a dangerous Czech Republic team. Similarities can certainly be seen with countryman van Gaal, if only in terms of volatility. Should Sunderland appoint the Dutchman as a successor to Poyet, it's very difficult to forecast the consequences. If results immediately fall his way (with the derby looming in April, of course), the fans will likely warm to Advocaat's grizzled temperament and old-school nous. More of the same, however, and a yearning for Gus' vibrancy and passion could well cause the club's owners a host of further problems. Advocaat is a risk - no question about that - but one Sunderland supporters will be used to given the stomach-churning nature of their last few seasons.
