Wimbledon 2014: 8 Contenders Who Could Win It

2. Roger Federer

Wimbledon Track Record: Won 7 Wimbledon Titles (2003,'04,'05,'06,'07,'09 and '12) tying Bjorn Borg's record for winning 5 consecutive titles from 2003-2007. Reached 7 consecutive finals from 2003-2009. He has a Wimbledon winning percentage of 89.33%. Apart from last year's shock loss to Sergie Stakhovsky, Federer had never failed to reach the quarterfinals in 10 years! In short Federer is the epitome of consistency at Wimbledon. Grass Court Game: Federer's offensive all court game is best suited to the fast slick grass courts of SW19. His controlled aggression is rewarded on the grass in the form of winners and equally his court craft can force his opponents into awkward positions and forced errors. His ability to attack the net and hang on the baseline means that in order for his opponent to beat him, his opponent must play 'lights out' tennis. In the era of Federer's Wimbledon dominance Rafael Nadal had to win the greatest Wimbledon final match against Federer and years later the likes of Thomas Berdych in 2010 and Jo Wilfred Tsonga in 2011 were forced to play their very best in order to upset Federer on the lawns of SW19. His record at the Wimbledon warm up in Halle also highlights the extent of his grass court dominance having recently won his 7th Halle title. The fact that he is now older and a step slower effects him minimally on a grass court as the surface does not allow for long gruelling rallies and rewards the brave shot making that underpins his entire game with easy points both on serve and off of his groundstrokes/volleys. Current Form: After an injury plagued 2013, Federer has rekindled his form heading into Wimbledon 2014. He has defended his title in Halle, currently holds a winning record against top 10 players this season and is displaying a level of tennis not seen since 2012. With new coach Stefan Edberg as part of his entourage, Federer will no doubt seek to incorporate a more attacking net game on the grass that should bear fruitful results en-route to what would be a record breaking 18th grandslam and 8th Wimbledon Championship. Wimbledon '14 Prediction: Final/Winner His current form, grass court game and Wimbledon track record indicate a strong Federer showing at this year's Wimbledon Championships. His freak 2013 loss to Stakhovsky should not be seen as the demise of Federer's grass court dominance as Federer was injured during that very close match that Stakhovsky narrowly won in four tough sets. The match might prove to be a significant reminder to Federer that there are no free matches on a grass court, and might serve to spur him on to reclaim a title that he and the tennis world values above all others.
