9. Star Trek Action Figures By Mego
In 1974, Mego released its first series or 'wave' of Star Trek action figures, a set of five featuring 'Capt. Kirk,' 'Dr McCoy (Bones),' 'Mr. Scott (Scotty),' 'Klingon,' and 'Mr. Spock'. The Lt. Uhura figure was only added and included in the face cards at the end of 1974. By all measures, all fully-posable eight inches of measure that is, Mego had produced a rather good bunch of action figures that looked like the real thing — the first in the world for Star Trek.
Riding high on the plastic fantastic, Mego launched its 'Star Trek Aliens' action figure collection in 1975. More or less, often less, faithful to the franchise, the first run included 'Cheron' (the metaphor from Let That Be Your Last Battlefield), and 'The Keeper' (basically Balok's puppet in a white/orange robe). It was the Gorn figure that took the… most creative licence — its head was a re-use of a lizard from Mego's Marvel superhero line, its body was General Ursus from Planet of the Apes, and its outfit was suspiciously similar to that worn by the Klingon action figure.
That first run of Aliens also included a 'Neptunian' in a bathing suit, making the Gorn figure look closer to canon than Kirk's makeshift anti-Gorn cannon. Released in the second wave of Aliens in 1976 were 'Andorian,' 'The Romulan,' 'Talos,' and, for some reason, a clothed Mugato.
From action figures to action playsets and accessories, Mego's run of Star Trek toys in the 1970s included the now legendary 'U.S.S. Enterprise Action Playset' that memorably came with the 'spinning transporter'. Broken by Sheldon Cooper, egged on by talking Mr. Spock action figure, 'The Transporter Room,' as sold separately, was a UK exclusive for Palitoy.
Oh, and how could we forget the equally iconic Mego Star Trek Tricorder, Communicators, Command Console, Mission to Gamma VI, Super Phaser II Target Game, Telescreen Console, and Star Trekulator!
