7 Ups & 2 Downs From Star Trek: Discovery 5.9 — Lagrange Point

9. UP — Badda-Bing, Badda-Burnham; Badda-Bing, Badda-Breen

Star Trek has drawn from, and played on, the heist movie before, most notably the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang, which took direct inspiration from (the original) Ocean's ElevenStar Trek: Voyager's Dark Frontier then traded casino for the 'Fort Knox' of a Borg sphere in its transwarp coil caper. If you're a Lurian, or just Morn, you can always get away with it by hiding the liquid latinum in your second stomach! (See: the Lissepian Mother's Day Heist)

What Badda-Bing…, and to a certain degree Dark Frontier, also had was what TVTropes would call the "Unfolding Plan Montage". In Lagrange Point, we equally see Burnham and team(s) (Alpha and Bravo) plan the (crazy but do-able) plan to steal back the Progenitors' tech from the Breen. Even, and especially, when it all went wrong, it was still thoroughly, shuttle-explodingly, gripping.

Aboard the dreadnought, we were treated to a mix of out-and-out caper comedy, extra points on Breen lore (some are 'badda'; others, a little flirtatious), and surely one of the riskiest, most dangerously daring rescues ever attempted! Hold on to your helmets, for all the best-laid schemes of Burnham and Breen gang aft airlock'd!
