9 Ups & 2 Downs From Star Trek: Resurgence

5. Up: How To Influence People

The heart of Resurgence comes down to its decision making structure and paths that are formed off the back of those. In many games the cut scenes are optionally skippable yet with Star Trek's latest addition the narrative is an essential part of the experience.

While on one hand it is akin to watching an episode, there are a considerable number of points where Rydek or Diaz will be required to make one of three choices in their response to what is happening around them. This isn't to fire a phaser or scan with a tricorder, but rather to interact with other characters and influence the outcomes.

In turn this nifty and very Star Trek feature of the gameplay means that fans will be affecting how their relationships with a selection of other characters will progress. In Rydek's case her choices will mainly affect the senior staff as well as key players in the mission. As the game moves along, the Relationship screen helps keep track of how others have reacted in a positive, negative or neutral way indicated by the green, red or white edging around their character icons during the story.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
