Star Trek: 10 Secrets About The USS Dauntless You Need To Know

3. When Is Starfleet Not Starfleet?

The USS Dauntless from Voyager's Hope and Fear was purposely made to look Starfleet but yet also not look Starfleet.

The most evident choice in this was the colour of the hull which went though several iterations before a light grey was finally settled on. Other concepts for the ship had her with a copper finish or even a darker almost charcoal colouring that would have given the game away in a second. As it is, the Dauntless has just enough difference that she might be Starfleet but is just a shade different to Voyager herself.

In terms of design of the original, Rick Sternbach would produce the initial sketches to then be turned over to Foundation Imaging to create a 3D version. To ensure that it retained its bullet-shape, a protruding top-mounted bridge element was eliminated allowing for a sleek hull curve.

Explained Prodigy producer Aaron Waltke in terms of Admiral Janeway's version: "The most evident changes we made were the hull shape, the metallic plating, and the altered nacelles. (This was) a noticeable departure that was inspired by but not identical to Arturis’ more biological design."

The Prodigy Dauntless has its nacelles tucked in much closer to the hull while they are also slightly longer and set further back than on Arturis' fake Starfleet version.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
