7. Cataclysm/No Man's Land
Published: 1998-1999
The Premise: A major earthquake strikes an already fragile Gotham City leading to a series of chaotic events eventually culminating in the complete evacuation and abandonment of the city.
Why it Would Work: Like the previous entry on our list, Cataclysm serves to feed the growing appetite for disaster viewers have developed. Unlike Contagion, however, Cataclysm doesn't see citizens in an attempt to escape something deadly as they've already been trapped by the earthquake. The story would be great told in a non-linear format through the perspective of various characters as they each manage to survive the quake and subsequently join in rescuing those that weren't as fortunate. Through much of the story most characters are completely unaware of Batman's whereabouts or his condition, giving us time to connect with significant characters other than our title hero. The aftermath has deadly consequences as subplots involving the inmates of Arkham Asylum, Bane, and Poison Ivy tell of their opportune timing to do bad. No Man's Land addresses the fate of the city as the devastating destruction leads the US government to destroy all bridges leading to Gotham and declaring it unfit to live in. Some are unable to leave, however, so members of the police department and other heroes remain behind to protect those citizens from the chaos wrought by the violent criminal activity. These stories alone could take up an entire season as the forces of good remain to protect the innocent while attempting to rebuild their beloved home. Everyone is affected by the disaster in some form or another and allegiances must be made in order to survive. This is a tale of fortitude and endurance and shows a much different side to the dangers of Batman's world and one that all fans should experience.
