The Simpsons: 8 Recent Big Moments You Might Have Missed
4. Dr. Wendy Sage
There have been literally countless characters to have been introduced to Springfield over the last three decades. From the titular family, to secondary characters like Mr. Burns and Principal Skinner, and even more obscure characters like the Rich Texan and Rafael, each one has their own story and is loved in their own way.
The show also has an extensive catalogue of wonderful characters who have appeared in just one episode, and now Dr. Wendy Sage can be happily added to this list after her appearance in season 33's 'Lisa's Belly'.
When Lisa was feeling troubled about her appearance, she went to see a hypnotherapist in the form of Dr. Sage. The character was a breast cancer survivor, and had visibly undergone a mastectomy procedure in the past, having one of her breasts removed. She was also voiced by Renee Ridgeley, a breast cancer survivor herself.
The Simpsons has been rightly praised for such a character, but the greatest thing about both her and the episode was that it didn't focus on her past. Dr. Sage's cancer didn't define her, and she was presented as a strong woman who owned her disease sending an incredibly powerful message of acceptance and celebrating who she is. This is so important for everyone to see, both people who have lived with or been affected by cancer and those who haven't, and The Simpsons deserves a lot of credit for this.
