Originally just a mysterious new teacher at Mystic Falls High School, Alaric Saltzman eventually emerged as one of the most complex characters in The Vampire Diaries. Standing at the centre of a multitude of juicy plotlines, Alaric has also appeared in both The Originals and Legacies, the two wildly successful spin-offs of the original series.
Portrayed by Matthew 'Matt' Davis, Alaric remains a firm fan favourite. One of the only people whom Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) ever considered a friend. Alaric also functioned as a caring father-figure to Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen) and a well-liked member of the Mystic Falls community.
Famously unlucky in love, Alaric faced multiple tragedies during his time on The Vampire Diaries. From the untimely deaths of Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) and Jo Laughlin (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) to the character's infamous stint as 'Evil Alaric', the showrunners certainly put Alaric through the wringer.
While Davis' off-screen antics and Twitter rants have recently fueled controversy amongst fans of the show, Alaric nonetheless holds a special place in the hearts of many who watched the series.
