Doctor Who: Every Series 3 Episode Ranked From Worst To Best
10. The Lazarus Experiment
Dr. Lazarus' pursuit of eternal youth leads him to an experiment gone horribly wrong. Essentially, the episode is what happens when you put The Doctor in Jekyll and Hyde. Whilst the plan does succeed in making Lazarus young again, he also has a new hunger for flesh and transforms into a hulking CGI beast.
It's tough to say if this was impressive for the time but it has certainly aged, as with the vast majority of CGI Who monsters.
This episode occupies an interesting space of not necessarily being a puzzler. Lots of Doctor Who stories are about mysteries and the Doctor thinking their way out of a problem. The Lazarus Experiment tries to have a few philosophical conversations but its best moments are about running away from a big, scary monster.
The problem is that once that big monster arrives, that's really all the episode is.
Overall, it's just a frankly below-par story. It's not irredeemably or offensively bad by any means but in the grand scheme of the season, it feels like you miss precious little giving it a skip. Even if it does lay seeds for the season's over-arching Mr Saxon plot, The Lazarus Experiment loses its purpose about halfway through and sputters to a stop.
