Doctor Who: Every Series 3 Episode Ranked From Worst To Best
8. Smith And Jones
Freema Agyeman stepping in as the first replacement companion was, like the first regeneration in NuWho, a trepidatious thing. Smith and Jones is, at its best, a brilliant example of not fixing what's broken. Davies clearly looked at what worked for the episode Rose and used it as the starting point.
Up to a certain point, Smith and Jones puts us in the life of Martha Jones - her job as a trainee doctor, her struggles with her fractured family, and then suddenly the world turning on its head. Or rather, her place of work being teleporting onto the moon.
It's an absolutely bonkers concept that gives way for plenty of room for everything a "re-pilot" needs. The Doctor and Martha have sparks together, with the newly companion well and truly established as a clever and resourceful type of woman who instantly sees that reflected in her new alien friend. Furthermore, the Judoon - space-faring rhino private militia - are an incredibly memorable addition.
Which is good because they don't have to compete with the villain in that sense. Whilst expertly portrayed by Anne Reid, Florence is little more than a vicious criminal in the disguise of an old lady. She's about as interesting as her "Slab" goons, who are just stuntmen in bike helmets.
A perfectly fine start to the series but it'll never be anyone's favourite.
