It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the biggest WrestleMania runback at Backlash came at the very first Backlash PPV, and it involved the two biggest stars of that era.

At WrestleMania 15, The Rock and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin had the first of what would be a Mania trilogy. Austin had won the WWF Championship at the previous WrestleMania, but Vince McMahon had managed to wrangle the title from Stone Cold and transfer it to his chosen wrestler, Rocky, at Survivor Series.

Austin would regain the championship by defeating Rock. Post-Mania, Austin tried to reclaim his stolen Smoking Skull championship, only for Rock to throw him into the river in Detroit on Raw. This set up the return bout at Backlash, which was a no-holds barred match. That contest featured the now-iconic moment of Rock grabbing a camera and filming during the match, only for Stone Cold to flip him off (on-camera) and Stunner him.

Despite a bunch of interference, ref bumps and foreign objects, Austin picked up the win and retained his title as WWF continued its hot run that ultimately spelled doom for rival WCW. Austin and Rock would battle again for the WWF Championship at WrestleMania X-Seven, but there wouldn’t be a return bout at Backlash that year.
