10 Best Matches From The G1 Climax 30

8. EVIL Vs. YOSHI-HASHI (G1 Night 4)

Kota Ibushi G1 Climax 30
NJPW

This might seem like an odd choice to put on the list of the best matches of the tournament, but in terms of narrative engagement and emotional resonance, it has to be on here.

Paying off the YOSHI-HASHI and EVIL New Japan Cup angle, where EVIL attacked the fan favourite before the bell and locked him in a murderous Scorpion Death Lock until he passed out, this phenomenal rematch showcased what YH had learned from his opponent's sadistic torment and further cemented EVIL as one of the cruellest heels in modern pro wrestling.

The main submission sequence was one of the most tense in years, with the crowd on the edge of their seats for every second, hoping that the beloved underdog could pull the victory away from the carnivorous EVIL. The wrestling was excellent throughout, with EVIL implementing his cheating tactics alongside his brute strength flawlessly. But most importantly, it cemented YOSHI-HASHI as a worthy star who deserved to be in the G1 this year, a natural babyface talent who was capable of wrestling in a way that he's rarely been given credit for. An excellent, underrated match.
