Fans were salivating at the prospect of an AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura match as soon as the King of Strong Style won the 2018 Royal Rumble. With memories of their New Japan classic still fresh and Styles' WWE Championship at stake, most were disappointed by their match at the Showcase of the Immortals.

Never clicking into a high gear, the match did not meet the perhaps unrealistic expectations many had. Further mixed feelings were created when the likeable and charismatic Nakamura ended the night nailing Styles with a low blow to turn heel.

Hoping it was an off night, the two went at it again the following month at Backlash. Fought under No Disqualification rules, this allowed the feud's fascination with low blows to continue. As the match came to a close, Nakamura hit Styles low, only for AJ to return the favour shortly after.

Disappointment abounded at the finish of the bout, as both men kicked each other downstairs, knocking themselves out for a non-finish. Despite having two of the most talented wrestlers on the roster in the match, the contest again did not reach the levels the pair had set years earlier. Ultimately a disappointment that did not improve on the original.
