10 Best Wrestling Matches Of The Week (August 1)

Did Cage vs. The Mack or Cena vs. Rollins take the top spot this week?

Ring of Honor and Lucha Underground have boosted the quality of wrestling matches over the past week. Thanks to last weekend's Death Before Dishonor XIII and the kickoff to Ultima Lucha, those companies are represented slightly more than normal this time around.

WWE still had plenty to talk about. Smackdown featured an impressive tag team main event and there was a good women's match on Raw. NXT even featured an enjoyable bout for their tag team titles. But the real story from WWE this week was yet another great U.S. Championship match from John Cena. His broken nose added tons of emotion to his match with Seth Rollins.

TNA is the only company normally covered that didn't chart this week. That was understandable considering their Hall of Fame night and the buildup to next week's No Surrender event.

The 'week' cycle that is represented in this article features the prior weekend's PPV's and special events and continues until Thursday Night Smackdown. The list is ultimately my own opinion but I do compare my personal match ratings with several other authors, so there is a slight attempt at peer review in this process.

The following ten matches are the best wrestling bouts of the week...

10. Big Show vs. Dean Ambrose (Raw)

Monday Night Raw was touted as a night of firsts, with the first first being a singles match between Big Show and Dean Ambrose. The blatant size mismatch feuled the story in this one.

Ambrose took a beating but kept coming back. Two chokeslams in the ring and a spear on the outside couldn't halt Ambrose, not even by countout. The blow that finally ended the match came in the form of a KO punch. This caused Ambrose to lose via countout.

Post-match, Big Show tried for one final offensive move in the form of a spear. Ambrose had the last laugh, side stepping Show as he crashed and burned through a barricade.

I assume that Ambrose is still penciled in to tag with Roman Reigns at SummerSlam, but a side feud with Show could work well for him. The two have chemistry as shown in this match.
