But it’s difficult to look beyond the closing moment of the very first Elimination Chamber bout as the greatest in the match’s history.

Having seemingly had his career ended by a back injury in ‘98, Survivor Series 2002 marked the culmination of the Heartbreak Kid’s return to the top of the mountain, as he defeated Triple H to win his first world title in over four and a half years.

It was something of a fairy-tale story for HBK, and a genuine feel-good moment in wrestling. Not only had Michaels overcome injury and his many demons to return to the profession he loved, but he was arguably performing to an even higher standard than he had been during his initial run.

Of all the moments in his storied career, this may well have been the greatest—and that’s really saying something.

The only blemish on an otherwise perfect night was his dubious choice of attire, which even his so-called best friend has since called into question. Given everything he’s done for the business since though, I’m sure we can forgive him for that.
