In the year 2000, John Cena and Samoa Joe were both in UPW and feuded while working their shows. Playing off of that history in WWE 2015 would be a great way to give Samoa Joe the grounding in something WWE-based for his raison d'etre to be in the company. Let's step backwards and think about when John Cena challenged Seth Rollins. What if Rollins put on his "Architect" cap again and said, "John, before you wrestle me, I have a contract with your name on it for Night of Champions that says you can't beat the man that Triple H has put in front of me...a man from your past...Samoa Joe."
