10 Big Bumping Wrestlers Who SUFFERED For Their Art
6. Abyss
Abyss was TNA’s homegrown hardcore icon, but the character was often burdened by comparisons to Mankind/Mick Foley. This served as inspiration for the man behind the gimmick (Christopher Joseph Parks) to push his stunts and spots to the viciousness of his contemporaries and forefathers.
Almost all of Abyss’ key feuds and PPV matches involve violence and big bumps. Some examples include throwing himself from the entrance scaffolding at Bound For Glory 2006, being tortured with barbed wire at Against All Odds 2008, and Christian Cage slashing him open with broken glass at Hard Justice 2007.
Two matches stand out in making Abyss a hardcore legend.
At Turning Point 2005, he faced off against ECW Original Sabu in a match where both competitors threw themselves into barbed wire without hesitation, left broken weapons in their wake and even used a spike to inflict head trauma.
Abyss had his chance to face off with Foley at Bound For Glory 2009. The match was a violent passing of the torch. Abyss scored the victory after both men were bloodied, busted open, and had exhausted even their sick, sadistic minds.
