Did you honestly think you would ever see the day where AJ Styles was in WWE?

The more time passed, it appeared less and less likely that WWE would sign him, especially since he seemed content killing it over on the Japanese wrestling scene and in Ring of Honor. But once rumors ran rampant in the first week of 2016 that Styles was WWE bound, that was when fans knew this year would be something special.

At the 2016 Royal Rumble, Styles made his long awaited WWE debut in the No. 3 slot, and no one could have ever predicted the remarkable response he received on that night. WWE might have signed him thinking he would be a nice addition to their midcard scene, not expecting he would be come an immediate main-eventer.

From his fantastic feud with Chris Jericho to his stellar series of matches with Roman Reigns, to defeating John Cena clean at SummerSlam, Styles has truly been the Superstar of the Year for WWE in 2016. All of those accolades are in addition to him clinching his premiere WWE World Championship at Backlash in September, a title he will hold heading into the new year.

Signing Styles was easily the wisest investment WWE made all year in terms of talent pickups, which asks the question of what other notable names in the wrestling world the company might take a chance on in 2017.
