10 Controversial WWE Releases
6. Charlie And Jackie Haas, 2005
True to his word, and a fortnight after announcing his company would be making roster cuts, Vince McMahon did exactly that. Of course, he hadn’t mentioned the slight detail that those roster cuts would prompt one of the largest exoduses in WWE history.
Some had speculated that the decision was a response to poor financial results in the prior quarter, while others suggested the cost-cutting was designed to make room for Brock Lesnar on the payroll. Whatever the true reason, the fact remained that a total of 18 wrestlers were released from the company in the week commencing 4 July 2005.
On that list of 18 were Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley, former Tough Enough winner Maven, and the newly-wed couple of Charlie and Jackie Haas.
Not only that, but Mr. and Mrs. Haas had only just arrived back from their honeymoon when they received the news that they were both now out of a job. Meanwhile, Lesnar never re-signed with the company, rendering the cost-cutting measures redundant. No pun intended.
Charlie later noted that, “I'm just glad they waited until after the wedding,” which is more than another former employee can say…
