As the calendar rolled over to 2007, WrestleMania 23 plans had Triple H as the one challenging John Cena for the WWE Championship, a rematch from one year earlier with Helmsley now a babyface. Other outlets have said that Shawn Michaels would've been involved, as a triple threat.

Helmsley would have no such involvement, it turned out. Three weeks before the Rumble, "The Game" would suffer the second serious quadriceps tear of his career, and would be shelved for more than seven months. Obviously, WrestleMania wasn't going to be in the offing.

Before the injury, the plans were for Helmsley to win the Rumble match as a means of earning the title shot. That would've left Undertaker probably winning some top contenders' match on SmackDown or at No Way Out, in order to get his match with Batista.
