When the elimination matches were the biggest selling point of the show, it was common for Survivor Series to end with one. From 1987 through 1993 (sans 1992), each Survivor Series concluded with an elimination bout. Then it didn't happen again until 2001. Then again in 2004. Then again in 2005. Then not for a while.

The 2014 show almost had to end with the match in which people's jobs were on the line. It broke a nine-year-long streak of Survivor Series ending with either a World title match, or a tag team match featuring The Rock.

Elimination matches were all but relegated to the undercard, almost solely existing to satisfy the classic spirit of the event. At least 2014 demonstrated the possibilities of making classic Survivor Series bouts have grave implications for the losing side.
