As Michaels demonstrated in his five-star opus with Undertaker, he was still "The Showstopper" at age 43, and every bit the masterful artist he had been since he was in his twenties. Michaels, however, admitted in an interview WrestleMania weekend with Chicago radio station Q101 that he was eyeing retirement a year later, when WrestleMania rolled into Glendale.

Michaels noted in the interview that his contract expired around the time of WrestleMania 26, and that he wanted to spend more time with his children as they grew up. Michaels had also been sidelined by a handful of knee injuries over the previous few years, and wasn't getting any younger. Although "The Heartbreak Kid" could still perform without limits, he saw the early part of 2010 as the ideal time to exit.
