Opinion was heavily divided on this particular match at the time. To some, it was a modern masterpiece, a 25-minute tour-de-force between two of the best young up-and-coming stars in the business. To others, it was a boring, rest hold-filled bore with a hot finish and not much more.

When I watched the match at the time, I was in the latter camp, but the match has really grown on me with subsequent viewings. Yes there are one or two dead spots when they're clearly slowing the pace down, but why should they go full throttle for so long? Those slower periods are there for a reason, to bring the crowd down so they can bring them right back up later.

Y'know, that whole wrestling match as a 'rollercoaster ride' mentality...

Anyway, there wasn't any huge storyline going into this, but Edge had been feuding with Orton and Evolution through the spring and summer months. He hadn't been long back in the ring and was gunning for gold. Randy, meanwhile, had been establishing himself as one of the most dominant Intercontinental Champions ever and had held onto the title for about eight months.

The Legend Killer was starting to become more and more popular and the fans were split during this one, chanting for both men. Edge got them back on his side during the great closing stretch, however, and the fans erupted when he finally won the match with a Spear.

Edge's IC Title reign would turn out to be lacklustre and short-lived thanks to injury, but it got off to a good start at Vengeance (and his and Orton's subsequent rematches were pretty tasty as well).
