10 Greatest Final Two Competitors In The WWE Royal Rumble
9. Triple H & Dean Ambrose (2016)
Coming off the back of two incredibly unpopular Rumbles, 2016’s event had its work cut out for it, and having 46 year old Triple H go over - winning the World Title in the process, like his hero Ric Flair - was a dangerous decision to make, especially when he’d be doing so against the hugely over Dean Ambrose.
HHH had an ace up his sleeve, though: his name was not Roman Reigns. The Orlando crowd would have cheered anyone over the Big Dog, and after the superb tussle Hunter had with Ambrose, they were happy to accept The Game as their champion once again.
Though company man Helmsley and wildcard Ambrose seem diametrically opposed personality-wise, as wrestlers they gel terrifically. Old school grapplers with a great grasp of psychology, they put together a brief but eventful final stretch, with underdog Ambrose using every weapon in his locker to attempt to overcome the wily veteran.
He turns the crowd into believers, but ultimately Hunter triumphs. The two never shared a major programme, but off the back of this, it could have been a scorcher.
