Mick Foley is the embodiment of a wrestler succeeding against the odds, as the journeyman became a multiple-time world champion during WWE's Attitude Era. His Mankind persona underwent a renaissance throughout 1998, where the grotesque monster figure became an oafish comedy character vying for the affections of Mr. McMahon.

After trying to assist McMahon in his pursuit to halt the rise of 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin under the guise of Dude Love, Foley transitioned back into the more comedic version of Mankind. In a number of memorable television segments, Vince resisted Mankind's attempts to befriend him, which involved the invention of the 'Mr. Socko' gimmick. The pairing was successful in helping Foley turn face, which was cemented when he was screwed out of the WWE Championship in the final of the 'Deadly Game' tournament at Survivor Series 1998.

The Rock had been selected as the corporate champion, which garnered a great deal of support behind Mankind who managed to defeat his adversary on the 4th of January, 1999 episode of RAW. The title change was made even more historic due to the all-time great error made by WCW trying to spoil the result. This led to many of their viewers changing channels to see Mick Foley win his first world title.
