10 Most Notorious Stone Cold Steve Austin Urban Legends

1. He Didn't Want To Face Hulk Hogan At WrestleMania 18 Due To Personal Reasons

Story: It seemed like an obvious match. Steve Austin was WWE's top guy for years and then WWE bought WCW. A year later in 2002 right before WrestleMania 18, Hulk Hogan returned to WWE after nine years away. The assumption was that WWE would do a match between Austin and Hogan. It didn't happen. They actually were a part of a 2 on 3 handicap match with Austin & Rock taking on Hogan, Nash & Hall, but there wasn't a singles match between them. There have been all kinds of theories as to why. One of the more popular theories is that Austin doesn't like Hogan and refused to work with him. Another opinion was that they would have never been able to agree on a finish although if Hogan was willing to put over The Rock like he did then he probably would have been done it for Austin too. Austin's talked about it many times in the past. He's said he didn't think they could have a great match because Hogan was so banged up at that point in his career. He was right. However, after watching Rock/Hogan he did say he wished he took the match because it would have been an awesome spectacle. Why People Believe It: There are a lot of people that don't like Hogan. Austin famously did a Hogan parody promo in ECW after he left WCW (Hogan was in WCW), so people figured there was heat there. Since Austin had a lot of power, he could have refused a feud. Should We Believe It: No. While Austin isn't the best of friends with Hogan, it likely was a case of thinking that Hogan was too far past his prime to have a good match. If they had a match that was a stinker it would have tarnished both of their legacies. At least he's been honest in saying he wishes he was able to do that match.
